God may have her in his keeping, but she will forever be in our hearts. Lura Jean Hawkins was born on July 21, 1946 to the parentage of the late Isaac Vernon “I.V.” Burleson and Mineola “Racy” Burleson. She joined Perry Memorial Church of God In Christ at an early age and was a 4th generation member. She was a very devoted, faithful, and active member in her church led by pastor Robert B. Jackson. She served in the role of Deaconess, Sunday School Teacher, and Announcing Clerk. She was also on the Public Relations, Fund Raising, Finance, and Steering Committee. Lura attended Tidwell Elementary school in Gause, Texas. In 1965, she graduated Blackshear High School in Hearne, Texas. She went on to attend Prairie View A&M University where she earned Bachelor of Science degree in 1970. Lura was married to James Hawkins for 21 years. From their union God blessed them with two daughters, Karla and Katina. Lura worked at Southwestern Bell/GTE and retired from St Joseph Hospital in 2011. She enjoyed her career to the fullest and continued to work part-time at the St Joseph’s hospitality desk up until the time of her passing. Lura was proceeded in her death by her parents; brother, Bobby Burleson; uncles Roy Jones and wife Cathy and Sam “Buddy” Jones Jr and wife Doris; and her Aunt, Pamela Jones. She leaves to cherish her memory two daughters, Karla Mingo (Mark) and Katina Baldwin (Charles) both of Desoto, Texas; three granddaughters, Somer Lewis of Dallas, Texas, Sydney Lewis of Desoto, Texas and Paige Hawkins of Austin, Texas; one sister, Erma Murphy of Hearne; sister-in-law, Bonnelle Burleson of Desoto; three nieces, Hope Gibbons, Kristie Blue, and Kimberly Bailey; one nephew, Christopher Burleson; special friends, Alma Gray and JoAnn Moody; and a host of cousins, relatives, and friends.

I am so sorry on the loss of your mother and grandmother. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I knew Lura when we worked together at GTE. Years later we worked together at St Joseph Hospital at the information desk. Lura was so sweet and kind. Often we would talk about our children and grandchildren which she was so proud of hers as I am of mine. In March 2020, due to Coronavirus St Joseph’s decided against the elderly working or volunteering due to our weaker immune systems. I continued calling Lura to check up on her. She was loved by so many. I will miss her. She is rejoicing with the Lord. RIP, my dear friend. Mary Helen Sifuentez
