Deacon Glenn Ray McCoy, Jr. was born on January 14, 1943, in Madisonville, Texas, to the late Glenn McCoy Sr. and Ira Jane McCoy. He attended Marian Anderson High School, where he graduated with the Class of 1963. He later married his high school sweetheart, Joann McCoy, and together they were blessed with three daughters: Gwendolyn, Bridget, and Rebecca.
Later in life, Glenn was also blessed with a daughter, Shonacee Paige McCoy. At an early age, Glenn united with Pool Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he developed a strong foundation of faith. On November 15, 1981, he was ordained as a Deacon under the leadership of Pastor Lloyd Jones. For more than forty years, Deacon McCoy faithfully served his church with humility, compassion, and unwavering dedication. If there was ever a need within the church or community, one could always depend on Deacon McCoy.
Glenn devoted much of his life to caring for others. On November 26, 1962, he became one
of the first African American EMT drivers for Madisonville County Hospital, faithfully
serving the community for twenty years before retiring in November 1982. He later
continued his career as an EMT/Paramedic at St. Luke’s Hospital in Houston before
accepting a position with the University of Texas Medical Branch-Texas Department of
Criminal Justice. He later served at the Texas Youth Commission’s Hamilton Unit in Bryan,
Texas, where he remained until his retirement in 2004.
Retirement did not slow him down. Glenn continued serving others as a private caregiver at
Madisonville Nursing Home. Many also knew him for his weekend work at Standley’s Gas
Station, where he enjoyed changing oil and performing automotive maintenance for
countless members of the community. Deacon McCoy was a familiar and respected figure throughout Madisonville. His life was defined by service, hard work, integrity, and kindness. When he wasn’t working or serving at church, Glenn cherished spending time with his family. He deeply loved his daughters, grandchildren, siblings, and extended family. Music was one of his greatest passions, and he could often be found serving as the family DJ, playing records during school reunions, family gatherings, and special celebrations. His warm smile, quiet strength, and servant’s heart will forever be remembered.
He was preceded in death by his beloved daughter, Bridget McCoy, along with his parents,
Glenn McCoy Sr. and Ira Jane McCoy, and siblings: Larry Joe McCoy, Otha Lee McCoy,
