Obituary

The Lord allowed me 104 years. It was all in His will. I was born in Brazos County, Texas. My birth date is October 13, 1917. My parents were A.C. Clark, Sr., and Edna Wilson. I lived on George Chance’s Farm/Brazos Bottoms with my mother and siblings. I was blessed to have two sisters, Willie Mae Wilson Crawford and Violia Clark Wilborn, four brothers L.M. Turner, Willie Clark, Sr., A.C. Clark, Jr., and James Otis Clark, who all preceded me in death. My family later moved to Wellborn, Texas, and we were members of White Chapel Church, where I also attended a one-room school with my siblings. Reverend Lucus was the pastor. The one-room school in White Chapel Church was from first through twelfth grade, and we had only one teacher. My teacher’s name was Mrs. Hattie Varighn. I walked to school every day because it was not far, only about half of a mile. On November 16, 1935, I married “My Love,” Mr. Alvin Jefferson, from Palestine, Texas. Reverend H. Pool performed our ceremony. We lived in Bryan, Texas. I worked as domestic help and cook for many years. “My Alvin” was one of the best cooks at a downtown Bryan restaurant. We did not have any children. After marrying Alvin, in about 1943, I joined Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, known as Forth Baptist (because it was the 4th black Baptist church in Bryan.) We didn’t have a piano, musician, or choir director at Galilee, so we all sang together. Later that same year, I changed my church membership and joined Greater Tabernacle Baptist Church under the leadership of Pastor William Henry Ear-nest Bass. There, I’ve had the privilege of serving in several ministries: Primary Sunday School Teacher (the Card Class), Senior Choir Member, Church Custodian, Member of Mission-1, and Mission Treasurer. Later, Pastor Dolphus N. Jones pastored for most of my tenure at Greater Tabernacle. My current pastor is Pastor Lawrence J. Hicks. I was very active at my church until my health began to fail. My financial obligations are also important to me, as I continued contributing to Mission-1 and my Sunday School class dues during my illness. One of my favorite books of the Bible is the book of Psalms. My favorite hymn is “Shine on Me.” My favorite foods are fried fish, fried okra, chicken, mashed potatoes, green beans, and a cold Dr. Pepper soda water glass. My favorite holiday is Christmas because it’s Christ’s birthday, and I also enjoy getting gifts. I took really good care of myself and didn’t have any major surgeries until I was about 96 years old; That right leg was just tired of walking to the bus stop, but I didn’t let that stop me. At 96, I could still do some things for myself, and I owe all the Glory to my God and Savior. I leave to cherish wonderful memories of me, to all my nieces and nephews, my church family, and a host of relatives and friends. As I leave you young people to finish your race, please always remember not to give up on God. As long as you can do! Be sure to do what you should, for then you will enjoy the personal satisfaction of having done your work well, and you won’t need to compare yourself to anyone else. For we are each responsible for our conduct. Galatians 6: 4-5. So, always be kind to one another. Why did I live to be 104? It was God’s will! I had my best friend, Jesus, along this long journey. My mission on earth is complete, and God is ready for me now in Glory. FARE THEE WELL, MY LOVED ONE
