Roy Johnson, Jr. was born September 8, 1934 to Roy Johnson, Sr. and Bertha Lewis, in Benchley, Texas.
In Roy’s early life he attended Hearne ISD. During his adulthood he enrolled in Vocational Training in Odessa, Texas. He later became a custom mattress maker, for Southern King Mattress, in Bryan, Texas, for forty plus
years. During this time, he was also a farmer raising hogs. You may have noticed him in the 1970’s on Pierce Street, now Martin Luther King Street, traveling with his feed for the hogs on the back of his truck. No way anyone could miss him. He had this routine down like clockwork. He continued this journey for fifty plus years.
Roy was a man of strength, strong values, and a generous spirit. Roy loved hunting, fishing
cooking, outdoors, and working on the land. He liked doing things that made him happiest and
brought him peace. He taught his children patience, hard work and to appreciate the simple
things that mattered most. Roy had a personality that no one could resist. From early childhood
to his teenage years and up until he met the Lord, he had a magnetic personality. He was vibrant.
Roy was a known jokester. If you gave him any type of attention he would have a good joke for
you. He loved to make people laugh.
He looked forward to the Annual Huntsville Prison Rodeo, which was always an enjoyable family
event. He would load up the family station wagon with his children, big red sodas, summer
sausage, cheddar cheese, crackers and of course his Coors Light. Bull riding was his favorite to
see. Although Huntsville is just fifty miles away it seemed like it took an eternity to get there
because everyone would be so excited.
Another family tradition Roy enjoyed was the Annual Johnson Family Reunion every August in
Benchley, Texas, on the homestead. The reunions were three-day events; Friday, Saturday, and
Sunday, with around the clock cooking and plenty of fun activities. Oh, yes, Roy could really
BBQ. Family from all over and some non-family members looked forward to the festivities and
bottomless food, it was always a joyous occasion. One would think half of Bryan, Texas was in
attendance because everyone wanted some of Roy’s finger licking BBQ. It was always plenty to go around and no one was ever turned away.
Above all Roy was a devoted father, family man, and friend. He leaves behind a legacy of hard
work, love of the outdoors, and cherished memories that will live on in the hearts of those who
knew him. He will be deeply missed but never forgotten.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents Roy Johnson Sr. and Bertha (Lewis) Johnson; brothers
John Arthur Johnson, Otis Johnson Sr., Willie Johnson, and Billy Johnson Sr.; sisters Rosie Lee
Shepherd and Beatrice Cox; sons Larry Johnson (Ft. Worth), David Johnson, Brooks McGee and
