HOMEGOING CELEBRATION FOR SIS. Doretha Kay Ayers Prothro-Harris

SUNRISE:August 4, 1959 SUNSET: March 31, 2022

On Thursday, March 31, 2022, our beloved
Doretha Kay Ayers Harris was called to her
heavenly home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ. Doretha was born in Caldwell, Texas to the
late James Ayers, Sr. and Elva Ayers on August 4,

  1. She was the youngest of four daughters.
    At an early age she accepted Christ as her Savior at
    New Hope Missionary Baptist Church, under the
    leadership of Reverend C.M. Roach and was
    baptized. The Family later moved their memberships
    to the Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church under
    the leadership of Reverend E.P Williams.

Her parents moved to Bryan, Texas and Doretha attended Bryan High School
and graduated in 1977. While attending Bryan High she was a member of the
Student Council, a member of the band where she played Bb (B flat) and
Base Clarinet. After graduating from High School Doretha attended Blinn
College, graduated and received her license from The Texas Board of
Nursing to practice as an LVN.
In 1986 she was united in Holy Matrimony to Mr. Lonnie Prothro of
Houston, Texas, and to this union two sons were born. Doretha loved nursing
and worked in various areas of health care until her health began to decline.
Although she was not physically able to continue working, she often used her
knowledge and nursing experience to help others.
In 2004 Doretha married Lorenza Harris of Bryan, Texas. She loved
imitating her mom’s favorite dishes. Her passion was in baking. She often
baked cookies and cakes for her fellow co-workers, birthday cakes for her
grandchildren, and brought delicious desserts to family gatherings.
Doretha was preceded in death by her parents, James and Elva Ayers; Lonnie
Prothro, Lorenza Harris and two nephews: Dale Ayers and Anthony Rector.
She leaves to cherish her memories: Sons, Justin Prothro (Ruby) of Houston,
Texas, Darrin Prothro of Bryan, Texas; three Sisters: Helen Walker of Bryan,
Texas, Hazel (John) Randle, Alma (Craig) Cotton of Austin, Texas; two
Brothers: James Ayers, Jr. of Houston, Texas, John (Tanya) Ayers of Bryan,
Texas; four Grandchildren: Isiah Chardene, Lailanie, and Miles; two Aunts:
Arleva Carr and Clemmie Taplin of Oklahoma; one Uncle, Leon Thomas of
Lubbock, Texas, and other relatives and friends.

Visitation Services will be held on April 8, 2022 at Daniel&Son Funeral Home located at 401 W 18th street, Bryan, Texas, 77803
