Obituary

Elder Royal Glenn (R.G.) Williams was born August 13, 1950 to Joe Curtis and Ora Lee (Wiggins) Williams, and was the 3rd of 12 children to their union. Royal came to be affectionately known as “Sug” or “SugarMan” to his loved ones. After professing hope in Christ at an early age, he was baptized by Rev. Perry. Royal began his educational endeavors at Carver Elementary, moved up to Neal Junior High School, and graduated from E.A, Kemp High School in the class of 1968. After graduation, Elder R.G. Williams joined the US Air Force in 1969, served, and was then honorably discharged in 1972.

In the year 1978 Elder R.G. Williams was called to the ministry and preached his first sermon, “Conflicts in Christians Lives.” He then served as Pastor of North New Hope Church. From there, R.G. became Pastor of Community Baptist Church in Waco, TX, and served there from 1986-1990. During his tenure, the church experienced tremendous growth, and its influences led to the formation of The Pecan Acres Community Improvement Association. Initially the church was denied insurance due to inadequate water supply, lack of sewer lines, defective fire hydrants, and little to no police protection. But after much prayer, numerous complaints, petitions and filing of applications, and aggressive activism in by this young preacher, the City of Bellmead and McLennan County Commissioners ended up upgrading the entire community, and even additional remodeling of the church was done.

On April 28th, 1990 Elder R.G. Williams held a meeting to organize Waco Sovereign Grace Baptist Church (WSGBC). On May 9th, 1990 at 12:30pm he was led to file the church’s name at McLennan County Court House. The theme was based from 1 Corinthians 3:11, “Christ is our Foundation”. R.G. then established a radio ministry at KBBW radio station on June 17, 1990. Through this ministry many people were blessed and began to visit the church. Elder Doyal Thomas (a Sovereign Grace preacher) from Seguin, TX began fellowship with WSGBC because of the messages he heard through the radio ministry. June 14th, 1991 WSGBC held its first retreat, with 55 members and 6 Pastors in attendance. The subject was “The Church Censor” and was derived from Matthew 16:19. The church retreat became a great opportunity for fellowship and study of God’s word, and was held 1 to 2 times a year until 2014. He also organized a youth meeting on October 26, 1991, helping youth with peer pressure and being young Christians, calling the group Training for Practical Christian Living (TPCL). Elder Williams always depended on God for his direction for the church. He tasked John Bible to search out land for expansion, which he brough back in the Faulkner Addition. In 1999, WSGBC purchased 7 lots, which are paid in full for the future home of Waco Sovereign Grace Baptist Church.

Elder R.G. Williams also had another vision for the church: a daycare center to be used a as a tool for church ministry. He intended for it to be a blessing to the church and the community by

providing quality childcare services to low-income families and to create revenue for the city and the members by creating jobs, while blessing the children with a spiritual education. The day care opened January of 2011 and God is blessing it to present day. Elder Williams vision was “a daycare today and a school or college tomorrow.”

Elder R.G. Williams was a member of the Texas Sovereign Grace Association, where he served as Vice President of the Evangelical Board. He leaves to his legacy one son in ministry Bro. John Bible.

On Sunday, September 4th, while surrounded by loving family and caretakers, Elder R.G. Williams was called home to be with our Jesus that he loved and served fervently in his time here on earth. He leaves to cherish his loving memory a daughter, Amber Royale Williams; his beloved mother, Ora Lee Williams of Bryan, TX; five brothers and five sisters: Brother Melvin Wiggins (Connie) of Waco, TX; Elder D.E.
