Obituary


Helen Cherry Mims was born in Marks, Mississippi on September 9, 1926. She was the only child of the late Willie Cherry and Birda King.

Helen grew up in Marks, Mississippi and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior at an early age. She moved to Cleveland, Mississippi in 1942 where she attended high school and graduated. She also attended college in Jackson, Mississippi.

Helen taught at a school in Tutwiler, Mississippi. She was employed at a dry cleaners in Cleveland, Mississippi. Helen was a very courageous young woman. She secretly advised women who came into the cleaners to vote, and for that reason, she lost her job at the cleaners. Helen couldn’t find work anywhere in Cleveland.

Helen moved to Chicago and worked at the Post Office. Helen loved to watch The Price is Right, and entering sweepstakes. She married Theodore Mims and moved back to Cleveland, Mississippi where they opened up a dry cleaning business. After the death of Theodore, Helen moved to Texas.

Preceding her in death was husband, Theodore Mims; her parents, Willie Cherry and Birda King; two daughters, Gloria King Williams, and Rosalind Yvette Cherry; one son, Milton King; two grandsons, Demetrius Redmond and Phillip Williams, III.

Helen leaves a world of cherished memories behind with her four loving children, Jacqueline Anderson of Jackson, Mississippi, Michael (Dorothy) King of Chicago, Illinois, Richard Cherry of Houston, Texas, Maurice (Cynthia) Cherry of Richmond, Texas; 18 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; and other relatives and friends.
