the leadership of Reverend Wilmer Ayers. John graduated from Smith High School in 1965 and left home to attend Jarvis Christian College in Hawkins, Texas; majoring in mathematics.

In 1967, he was drafted into the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War, serving in the 101st Airborne Division. John received the Bronze Star, the Air Medal, the Combat Infantry Badge, and numerous Overseas Badges, Ribbons, and Decorations. Miles Male Chorus, served as Trustee, Deacon, and Church Treasurer. His favorite hymns and songs were “Guide Me O Thou Great Jehovah” “I Don’t Know Why” and “Fix It Jesus.”

While continuing at Alcoa, he joined The Army National Guard and was a Heavy Equipment and Aircraft Mechanic. He was also a Helicopter Missile and Weapons Systems Repairman. John had a passion for repairing his own cars and assisting friends and neighbors when they needed help.
