Celebrating the Life of Tommy Lee Haynes

Obituary

Mr. Tommy Lee Haynes was born on June 19, 1938, the fourth of six children to the
parentage of Joe and Aronia Haynes. At an early age, he confessed Christ and was baptized
at Mt. Olive Baptist Church in Jewett, Texas where his family were members.
Mr. Haynes grew up in Jewett, Texas where he attended public schools and graduated from
George Washington Carver High School in 1958. He was a member of the George Washington
Carver Alumni Association and later served as President for two years. Subsequently, he
attended Wylie College in Waco, Texas. Around 1970 he moved to Bryan, Texas where he
met and married Lillie Smith on February 20, 1974. He was a devoted husband and father
to his wife and children, seven sons and one daughter. Mr. Haynes was employed for several
years by Granada Land and Cattle in Wheelock, Texas., as well as Texas A&M University
in College Station, Texas, from where he retired in 2003.
In 2019, he united with The New Jerusalem Missionary Baptist Church in Bryan where
he remained a member until his recent death. Mr. Haynes was preceded in death by his
parents, his wife, as well as a brother, Bobby Haynes, and a sister, Minnie Pearl Haynes.
He leaves to mourn his death and to cherish a lifetime of memories, his children, William
Smith (Shirley) of College Station, Texas, Charles Smith of Mckinney, Texas, Robert Smith
(Deanna) of Grand Prairie, Texas, Bobby Smith (Otherine) of Mesquite, Texas, Donna Smith
of Mckinney, Texas, Kenneth Smith (Cynthia) of Sasche, Texas, Darron Smith (Wanda) of
Brenham, Texas, and Mark Haynes (Charlotte) of Bryan, Texas; sisters, Margaret Jo Haynes
of Jewett, Texas, Irene Jackson of Dallas, Texas, Lorene Moses, Dallas, Texas; sisters-in-law,

Faye Haynes of Dallas, Texas, Maggie Spencer of Allen, Texas; 18 grandchildren, 29 great-
grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Mr. Haynes was an avid sports enthusiast as he closely followed and cheered for the Texas
A&M Aggies and Texas Rangers. His one flaw was that during football season, he faithfully
pulled for every opponent of the Dallas Cowboys. Along with the Lord, we forgive him for
this error in judgement. We will miss him tremendously yet are comforted in knowing we’ll
see him on the other side. Rest in Peace!
