Pastor Walter E. Nix, Sr.
Our dear Dad, grandpa, husband, brother, uncle, cousin and friend has stepped into a new dimension. He is gone home to be with our Lord. We are sure witnesses that God now has another “Angel” in His presence.
Walter Earl Nix, Sr. was born December 23, 1931, in Lyons, Texas, the third child of seven to the late Lawrence Clarence Nix and ViolaVashti (Washington) Nix. At an early age, he became a member of
St. James Christian Church in the Centerline Community, Burleson
County. Walter graduated from Snook Colored High School (Snook-Tunis, TX) and
attended college at Prairie View A&M University. On September 12, 1954, he married his loving, late wife (of 46+ years), Gloria Ann (Griggs) Nix. After receiving his education, he entered the United States Air Force and served for 20 years (approx. 1954-1974, during these years God blessed him and Gloria with two boys and one girl [1975]) and retired from the Air force, after which he worked for the Santa Fe Railway Tie and Lumber Plant in Somerville, from which he also retired. Walter answered God’s call into the ministry during the late 1970’s and embraced it with all of his heart. He served as Associate Minister at St. James Christian Church and not long after, was chosen as Pastor. In October 2003, he married Ollie Hodrick Ritchey from San Diego California.
Preaching the gospel was one of his loves. His favorite saying was “I love you and
there’s nothing you can do about it.” Also, he was a cowboy/rancher. He always loved
calling those he loved “Troops”! He was stern as a father and grandfather when needed, but he was the kindest man you would ever meet. He would give you the shirt off his back. He was that kind of man. He was always willing to help not only his family but others. He encouraged us to trust in God always. He has left a legacy of faith, peace, and love.
Preceding him in death were his parents, his 1st wife (Gloria Nix), two brothers (John
Ira Nix & Albert Nix), and two sisters (Ollie Bledsoe & Mary Nix). He leaves to cherish
his memory, his wife of 15 years, Ollie Nix, one brother, Lawrence “L.C.” Nix, three
children, Walter Nix, Jr. (Mahalia), Kenneth Nix, and LaTosha Nutall (Jeffrey), eight grandchildren, Adriel Carter (Rodrick), Rhesa Hickman (Markeith), Elisha Lee, Kenneth Nix, Kianna Holmes, Jordan Holmes, Isaiah Nutall and Laila Nutall; three step grandchildren, Faith Nutall, Aaron Nutall, Jerferrah Nutall; nine great-grandchildren, Acacia, Sharaad, T’erra, Brandyn, Micah, Tiereson, Rodrick II, Taralyn and Nya; and two step-great-grandchildren, JaMarcus and Kee’Asia. He also has many loving nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
