In Loving Memory of Johnnie Lee Payton, Sr.
A King’s Legacy
Johnnie Lee Payton was born September 9, 1939 to Joe Nathan Payton
and Claire Moore in Caldwell, Texas. Johnnie passed away on May 11, 2024
from an Automobile accident.
Johnnie attended and graduated from Lincoln High. Johnnie was a faithful
member and deacon at St. Matthew Baptist Church. Johnnie enjoyed playing
dominoes, cooking and fishing. Johnnie worked and retired from University
of California, in Los Angeles for over 44 Years.
Johnnie is preceded in death by his parents, Joe Nathan Payton and Claire
Moore; one brother, Alton Moore.
Johnnie is survived by his wife, Bety Jean Payton; and eight children; three
sons, Johnnie Payton, Jr., Mark Hill, and Aaron Payton; five daughters,
Camille Batts, Elaine Kendrick, Sherry Payton, Lamaya Payton, and Detanya
Payton; one daughter-in-law; Laura Payton; sons-in-law, Charles Batts and
Ronald Taylor; one sister, Alma Jean Moore; 22 grandchildren; 37 great-
grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren; four special friends,
Reverend John Lotts, Curtis Thomas, Mr. Simmons, and Mr. Watson; and a
host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and other relative and friends.
