Obituary

Mrs. Tommie Jean Dawson was born on March 2, 1930 in Elgin, Texas, to the late Nancy Taylor and
Homer James.
She professed Christ at a very early age. Upon relocating to Breckenridge, Texas, she joined and was
baptized at the Mount Olive Baptist Church. She attended Breckenridge Public Schools and later graduated
from the Booker T. Washington School of Breckenridge. She moved to Houston to further her education by
enrolling in nursing school, where she obtained her CNA and LVN licensed degrees. She worked in
various hospitals and even did private-duty nursing for special clients.
Upon her return to Breckenridge, she met and married Lt. Col. Lloyd Dawson of Oklahoma. She moved to
Oklahoma and had the pleasure of travelling vastly with him. Mr. Dawson passed in 1985 and they were
united until both of their demises.
Mrs. Dawson resided at Crestview Terrace until October of 2021, when her health began to decline. She
departed this life peacefully on Thursday, August 11, 2022 at the Methodist Hospital of Clear Lake
(Houston).
She will be remembered for her love of people. Two of her favorite cousins were Montie Joe and David
Shaw of California. She made many friends at Crestview. Among them were Karen, Kevin, and Mrs.
Briones, whom she spoke of often. She loved talking trash about “she being kin to Jesse James” and there
was nothing that “Mr. Jack Daniels” couldn’t cure!
Her stepson, Jodie and Angela stayed in contact often, and her nephews Melvin, Myron and Harry also.
But out of all, she chose to adopt two Goddaughters in her life and they were Dawn Gustavus and her
family, and Evangelist Fayeola Jones Johnson. Dawn and her family took her places and did many fun
things with her, and Fayeola has been with her to the very end, caring and providing in any way possible.
She loved the Lord and was faithful in her church works under Reverend Sparks. She lived a full,
adventurous life, as she would say, “with no regrets.” She will truly be missed by all.
Mrs. Dawson was preceded in death by her mother (Nancy), father (Homer); a sister, Carrie Byers; three
brothers, Harry James, James Shackleford, Jr. and Edward James; two cousins, Charles and Arthur Shaw.
She leaves to cherish her memories, a stepson, Jodie Durham (Angela) of Wylie, Texas; a very special
Goddaughter, Evangelist Fayeola Jones Johnson of Bryan, Texas; Dawn Gustavus (Kevin) of Midland,
Texas; four nephews, Harry Patton (Alberta), of Bryan, Texas, Willie Byers of Ft. Worth, Texas, Melvin
Byers of Bryan, Texas, and Myron Thomas of Daingerfield, Texas; two special cousins, Montie Joe
McDade of Corona, California, David Shaw of Oakland, California, and a host of nieces, nephews, and
friends.
