Home Going Celebration for Mr. Edward Washington Sr.
Obituary
Edward Washington, Sr. was born April 15, 1942 in Bridge City, LA, to the late Willie Washington, Sr. and
Eliska Nelson Washington.
He received and completed his education in the Jefferson Parish School System. He played semi-pro baseball
for the Negro League out of Bridge City, LA. He was given a scholarship to Grambling State University, but
he chose family instead. He fell in love at the age of 8 with Sylvia Mae White and they wed at the age of 19.
They had 8 children, Edward Washington, Jr., Paulette Washington Jackson, Joan Washington, Shawn
Washington Lords (Wallace), Devin Washington, Tanya Warren (Dennis), Zelda Jackman (Anthony), and
Clarissa Washington (Aaron), with 19 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
Edward received Christ at an early age. His love and dedication to his family and friends was immeasurable.
He was given nicknames like John, Rock, PawPaw, and Mr. Cool.
He loved cooking, listening to Johnny Taylor, Otis Redding, Sam Cooke and Lyle Jennings. He was 5 ft. tall
with the spirit of a 7 footer. He was an impeccable dresser, freshly starched pants, Ralph Lauren Polo, wiped
down shoes, Kango and a cigar. On Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day, he would buy each daughter that lived
in the area 12 long-stemmed roses. He taught all his grandkids how to tie their shoes and ride a bike. He set a
standard for his family and he lived by that standard.
He was known for giving wisdom, kindness, and love. “That’s the real World.”
Edward was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia Mae White Washington; his sons, Edward and Devin
Washington, his parents, Eliska and Willie Washington, Sr., his siblings, Willie Washington, Jr., Maggie
Williams and Irene Simmons.
