Home Going Celebration for Bro. James Melvin Ayers

Life Reflections

Mr. James Melvin Ayers was born on January 2, 1938, to the late Mr. James M.
Ayers, Sr. and Mrs. Elva Ayers in Burleson County, Caldwell, Texas. At an early age,
Mr. Ayers accepted Christ as his lord and savior at Providence Baptist Church of the
Belltower Community. In 1948, Mr. Ayer’s parents moved to Six Miles Community.
He then reunited with the New Hope Missionary Baptist Church of the Teals Prarie
Community under the leadership of Rev. B.E. George.
Mr. Ayers attended grade school in Belltower Community. After moving to the Six
miles community, He attended Smith High School in the Teals Prarie community and
graduated in 1957. After high school, he enrolled in Prarie View A&M University. He
was a member of the ROTC Drill team. They performed at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas,
Texas, The Orange Bowl in Miami, Florida, and on campus for special events.
He graduated with a bachelor’s degree. He was drafted into the U.S. Army in 1961,
and was honorably discharged in 1963.
He united in Holy matrimony to Miss Katherine Garrett on May 31, 1986. She was
the love of his life. He was a member of New Light Baptist Church under the leadership
of Pastor Harvey in Houston, Texas. He sang with the community Gospelettes for
several Years. Mr. Ayers retired from Bayer Chemica at the age of 62.
Mr. Ayers departed this life on July 27, 2022, at his home in Houston, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Mr. James and Elva Ayers of Bryan, Texas;
his wife, Katherine Garrett Ayers, of Houston, Texas; his sister, Doretha K. Ayers Harris
of Bryan, Texas; one stepdaughter, Leazer Claudia Garrett; and one stepson, Henry
Garrett of Houston, Texas
He leaves to cherish his memories: one son, Darrell J. Ayers, of Plainview, Texas; three
sisters, Helen Walker of Bryan, Texas, Hazel and husband John Randle and Alma and
husband Craig Cotton, both of Austin, Texas; one brother, John and wife Tanya Ayers of
Bryan, Texas; two stepdaughters; Betty Garrett and Brenda Garrett Nelma and husband
William; two stepsons, Jimmy Garrett, Sr. and wife Patricia, and Cermas Garrett and
wife Jennifer, all of Houston, Texas; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Visitation Services will be held on Friday August 05, 2022 at 11:00a.m. until 7:00p.m. at Daniel & Son Funeral Home located at 401 W. 18th Street, Bryan,Texas 77802

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday August 06, 2022 at 11:00a.m. at Goodwill Missionary Baptist Church, F.M. 1362 North Caldwell,Texas 77836
