Ona Mae McMillan Sims was born on November 30, 1939, to the proud parents, Dan and Mary Ann Johnson, in Brazos County, Texas. Ona began her educational journey by attending elementary and junior high school in the Bryan Independent School District and then graduated from E. A. Kemp High School in 1958. After graduating from high school, she enrolled in Blinn College. Later, she attended Prairie View University and received her Bachelor of Arts and a master’s degree in education.
Her religious journey began at an early age when she accepted Christ. She attended New Chapel Baptist Church, where she served faithfully as church financial secretary, church document notary, a member of Mission II, and a devoted vessel in Sunday School. She later united with Galilee Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Dr. Anthony L. Ross, Sr., where she served as a humble servant with Mission I, Sunday School, and Hospitality.
Ona married her dear classmate, Reverend Jackie Sims, who preceded her in death. Being a resilient young lady, she worked hard to support herself and her only son, Christopher McMillan. She worked for Motivation Education & Training (MET) as a social worker for many years. After graduation with her degree in education, she began working for the Hearne ISD as a teacher. She taught for 18 years before she retired.
Ona‘ ’s life pleasures included baking for family and friends, especially for special occasions. She was always on time, sending out birthday cards to church members and friends. What she enjoyed most was taking pictures. No matter what was happening, “Sis Ona Sims, the Great Photographer was passionate about making memorable photo albums to give to families after the death of a loved one. She was also a member of the Eastern Star Badell Chapter No. 9. Ona was preceded in death by her mother, father, four brothers, four sisters, and her loving husband. She leaves to cherish her memories her loving son, Christopher McMillan of Houston, Texas; nine grandchildren: Dashawn McMillan and Dashawndra McMillan of Bryan, Texas; Denzel McMillan, Kayla McMillan, and Niya Robertson Davis (Joseph) of Houston, Texas; Crescendo McMillan Sanchez (Rudy) of Whidbey Island, Washington; Nehemiah McMillan, Jeremiah McMillan, and Mariah McMillan of Houston, Texas; four great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces, nephews, and many other relatives and friends.
