Mel Jones, also known as “Boogie,” was born on October 3, 1933, in Tunis, Texas, to Zelma Jones and Collee Jones, Sr. At an early age, he accepted Christ as his Lord and Savior. He was a devoted Christian and a strong believer. Mel was united in marriage to Ethel Jones, and together they were blessed with five children: Kelcy Jones, Jessie Jones, Octavia Jones, Melvin Jones, and Marvin Jones. He was also blessed to father Brenda Taylor, Katherine Rogers, and Anna Davis.
In his early life, he worked as a carpenter. He enjoyed activities such as boxing, drawing, and dancing. He also loved spending time with family, playing cards, listening to music, and telling stories. Mel was one of ten children—five boys and five girls: Collee Jones, Jr. (preceded
in death), Geneva Jones (preceded in death), Huella Waller, Sam Jones (preceded in death), Andrew Jones, Leroy Jones (preceded in death), Ruthelma Hines, Azzie Beard, and Naomi Jones.
Known for his humor, Mel got along with everyone. He loved making his family laugh and was a very wise man.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Zelma Jones and Collee Jones, Sr.; his brothers, Collee Jones, Jr., Sam Jones, and Leroy Jones; his sister, Geneva Jones; his wife, Ethel Jones; three daughters, Anna Davis, Kelcy Jones, and Katherine Rogers; and three grandchildren, Tanya Taylor Williams, Maurice Tucker, and Jessica Holman. Mel leaves to cherish his loving memory his two daughters, Brenda and Octavia; two sons, Jessie and Marvin—two residing in Bryan, Texas, and two in Fargo, North Dakota. He also leaves to cherish his memory his grandchildren: Tiffany Taylor, Winzel Jones, Brittany Holman, Reginald Cole, Michael McDade, Battista Jones, Erica Jones Hendrickson, Jacori McDade, Melvin Davis, Dreama Tucker, Irene Davis, Portia Davis, and Katricia Tucker. He also leaves a host of great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
