Celebrating the Life of Alma Thomas

Obituary

Alma Ruth was born October 23, 1928 to Allen Smothers and Lena Jefferson Smothers. She was raised in the Fairview Community. She was married to John Robertson, Sr and they had one son, John Robertson, Jr. She later married Elton Thomas. Mrs. Ruth, as most people knew her, quoted, “my parents, Allen Smothers and Lena Jefferson Smothers, late husbands, and son, John Robertson, Jr., went home to be with the Lord”. She had one sister, Emma Aliene Masco living and one grandson, Elton Robertson.

Mrs. Ruth was baptized in 1942 by Rev. Hillard Banks in Mr. Sam Mosley’s tank. She has been a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church her entire life. She served as choir president, mission president, and Sunday School secretary for over 30 years. She worked with all auxiliaries of her church for over 50 years.

She was the first president of the Fairview School Reunion. She attended Fairview Community School and graduated from Fairview High School in 1946. In 1947 she enrolled in Madam C.J. Walker Beauty School in Austin, Texas, where she received her cosmetology license. She worked for Mrs. Tessie Ray Tefferson until she opened her own shop.

In 1963, she was an entrepreneur, owning and operating Ruth’s Beauty Shop and Candy Store in the Fairview Community for over 50 years. She loved fishing, cooking and working outside in the yard.

She was a member of the Grand Court of Calanthe for over 50 years and on October 20, 2007, with Counselor’s Degree.

Mrs. Ruth was in the cattle and ranching business for over 40 years, where she sold cattle. She also worked as a provider for her niece, Carolyn Masco and enjoyed it until her death. She always loved caring for older people. Some of the amazing things she had witnessed in her lifetime were, riding in the Juneteenth Parade, African American President, and A.A. Vice President, Juneteenth, A Federal Holiday.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena Jefferson Smothers and Allen Smothers; husband, Elton Thomas, son, John L. Robertson, Jr., sister, Emma Aliene Masco and niece, Carolyn Masco.

She leaves to cherish her memories, one grandson, Elton Robertson of San Francisco, CA; five great-grandchildren, Ashley Askew, Taylor Robertson, Raquan Robertson, Aqurius Robertson, and Kedren Robertson; one sister, Emma Aliene Masco; one sister-in-law, Cherlyn Auston; great-nieces, Raquel Masco, Valdie Masco, Ramona McCluster and Doris Marie Masco; great-nephews, Charles Masco, Jr. and Kevin Masco; great-great nephew, Trever Fusilier; great-granddaughter, Maliyah Jordan; and a host of other relatives and friends.
