Celebrating the Life of Alma Jewel Hamidullah

Alma Jewel Hamidullah was born on January 24,1958 in Robertson County, Texas to Betty Martin and Otis Johnson. She was lovingly given the nickname “Mank” by her great-great grandfather, Pastor Y.B. Taylor Sr. a name that stayed with her throughout her life.

She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Betty Martin and Otis Johnson, her maternal grandparents, Alma and Youngman B. Jones, and her paternal grandparents, Bertha and Roy Johnson. Alma’s early years were filled with creativity and joy. As a child her talent for designing doll clothes blossomed. She attended Jesse H. Jones High School (now Jones Future Academy) in Houston, Texas. After graduating, she pursed her passion by studying fashion design at Houston Community College.

In 1981, Alma united in holy matrimony to Ahmad Hamidullah, together they were blessed with two sons, Attiyah and Dawan. Alma accepted Christ and received the baptism of the Holy Spirit at a young age after attending a revival in Dallas, Texas. Her faith remained the cornerstone of her life. She was a devoted Christian and a faithful member of Brazos Valley Community Church of God in Bryan, Texas- first under Pastor Warren Roberts and later under Pastor Terrence B. Roberts.

Professionally, Alma worked as a secretary in Downton Houston, where her diligence and grace left a lasting impression. Personally, she was a woman of warmth and generosity. She loved shopping- both in stores and online and found joy in traveling. Her recent trips to Georgia and Tennesse, visiting Nashville, Memphis, and Atlanta, was filled with laughter, love, and wonderful memories.

Alma treasured time with family and friends, especially Sunday meals with her stepmom after church. She was known for her daily phone calls, checking in on loved ones with genuine care and affection. Her move from Houston to Bryan, Texas later in life brought her closer to more of her family. Alma never met a stranger. Her easygoing nature kind spirit and loving heart drew people to her effortlessly. She lived a life of faith and connection leaving behind a legacy of love that will continue to inspire all who knew her.

On Thursday, September 04,2025, Alma Hamidullah went home to be with her Lord and Savior. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered. She leaves behind her sons, Atiyya Hamidullah of Houston, Texas, Dwan Hamidullah of New York, her grandson, Jawan “Bubba” Dorsey of Houston, Texas, great grandson, Pure Dorsey of Houston, Texas, Her stepmom, Inez Johnson of Bryan, Texas, brothers, Otis Johnson Jr, (Tomi) of Somerville, Texas, Otis Johnson III of Bryan, Texas, Tony Newman (Sofia) of Bryan, Texas. Sisters Linda Matthew (Murray) of Houston, Texas, Jacqueline Johnson of Waco, Texas and sister, Treva Owens (Curtis) of Hearne, Texas, aunts, uncles, cousin, nephews’ nieces, and a host of friends.

The family would like to extend their deep appreciation and heartfelt thank you to Alma’s cousin, Dr. Carolyn Waldon and her uncle, Johnny Jones. for the many years of special care and support they provided to Alma and to be her special aunt, Lucy Peterson.
