A Royal Home Going Celebration for Mrs. Alice Marie Wilbert
Obituary
Alice Marie Hunter Wilbert was born to the proud parents Peter Hunter Sr. & Lula Grace Brisby-Hunter on April 28,1938 in Brazos County. She was the third child of thirteen to their union. Alice became affectionately known to the family as “Weethie”
She accepted Christ at an early age and was a faithful member of Greater Salem Missionary Baptist Church where she was under the pastoralship of Reverend E.E. Garvin and later Reverend M.D. Morgan. She served in the capacity as the church secretary and sang in the choir. She continued to be a member of Greater Salem Missionary Baptist Church until her husband Reverend Joe Wilbert Jr. became the pastor of St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church in February 2009. She joined him as the first lady and attended until she was no longer physically able to attend church.
Alice attended E. A. Kemp High School and graduated in 1958.
On October 25,1965, Alice and Joe Wilbert Jr. were united in holy matrimony at Salem Baptist Church by Reverend S. L. Morris Sr .in Steele Store. To this union they had four children Milton, Linda, Brenda, and Joe Wilbert III. She also inherited 3 bonus children Sean Hancock, Carolyn Adams, George Adams and later her nephew George Wilbert.
Alice was employed by the Bryan Public School System where she was a loyal employee at the Administration Office. She took pride in keeping the building emmaculate. She was also in a position that allowed her to encourage whomever crossed her path at Central Office. After 30 years of service, she retired with an unblemished record. To commemorate her years of service Mr. John Mohlman dedicated a bible in her honor and had it placed in the Administration library. The Bryan Daily Eagle also ran a story about her tenure with the district. Alice was loved and well respected by her colleagues and peers. She was blessed when Mildred Payton was hired to help her keep the Central Office clean. Subsequently, Mildred became her best friend. In 2017 she was honored as a “Hidden Figure”. Alice was always doing things behind the scenes to help others. Her kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.
Alice was a God fearing woman. She lived her life accordingly. She believed strongly in the institution of family. She cared for and loved her family deeply. She especially had a love for her children that some would say was over protective. She always made sure that on Sunday morning they went to church as a family. She made sure her children were respectful to the elders in the family and always looked out for each other. She enjoyed planning the family’s annual summer trip to Forth Worth, Texas. She and her cousin Bernice along with Diane would have a full itinerary for the entire week. Alice used to love going places with her niece Charlene and her sister Katherine. They were identified as Ride or Die (Alice) and Gangsta Granny (Kat) . She spent her free time crocheting, taking care of her home and family, eating out with her twin daughters and going to church. The highpoint of her weekends was to spend time with her sister Elizabeth and brother-in-law James Sterling every Friday until her sister’s demise. Her children’s East Park friends loved to eat at her house on Wednesday after school because she made the best spaghetti in the community. Her favorite holiday was Christmas. She loved to cook , bake, and decorate her home during the holidays. Those are memories that will be forever etched in the memories of her loved ones.
When she became a grandmother her heart grew bigger because she had more love to share. She loved being a part of her grandchildren’s lives. She loved to babysit them and show them how to do different things. As they started public school, she made a point to participate in any activities that was going on. Whether it was a dance recital, school program, basketball game, she was there! But, most importantly she instilled the value of education in her children and grandchildren. She was definitely an integral part of all her grandchildren’s lives. She will be sorely missed by them all. May God give them a peace that surpasses all understanding.
The legacy of Mrs. Alice Wilbert continues to live on through her children and their children. Although she had Alzheimer’s, she still had the love for her family and God. She praised God until he received her on September 29, 2022. Her favorite song was “Peace be Still”. As she struggled to stay alive each and everyday, Linda played her song and comforted her during her transition. She is in perfect peace now and rejoicing with the Lord.
