Mathews, Charlie Mae

Charlie Mae Green Parhms Moten-Matthews was born in Milam County, TX to James and Sirlina McGill Green. She accepted Christ at an early age and united with Litlle River Baptist Church in Branchville, TX and later moved to Bryan, TX where she united with Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in 1938 under the leadership of Rev. U. S. Keeling, Sr. She was a faithful member for 70+ years and served as Chairman of the Board of Deaconess until her health began to fail.

She worked with the youth in Sunday School, GA Girls, Shep-herd Boys League, BTU and Usher Board. She also worked teaching yut to learn the books of the Bible, did Bible drills and took them on church outings. In the earlier years this humble servant of God was blessed as a member of the Gospel Choir, the Senior Choir, the Culinary Committee, Secretary of the Sunday School, Deborah Mission Circle and the Finance Committee. She also represented her Church many years in the Old Land Mark District Association.

In the community, she was very active in school activities and served as PTA President, a member of the “I Have A Dream” garden club, Grand Court Order of Calanthe and worked with the citizens to get lights for the Eastside Park–late named the “Sadie Thomas” Park. She was known for baking, fishing, sewing and making quilts for family and friends. She was preceding in death by Husbands, John Moten and O. C. Matthews; two sons, Lawrence Charles Parhms and John Moten, III; three sisters, Ruth Pittman, Juanita Mar-tin and Dorothy Lacy; two brothers, James Green, Jr. (Buddy) and Elbert Green. Left to cherish her memories are one daughter, Johnnie Mae Moten Cunningham of Garland, TX; one son, Edward “Bubba” Moten (Louise) of Houston, TX; seven grandchildren: Randolph “Randy” Moten, Gregory Moten, Edward Moten, II, Ina Carmece Cun-ning, Rene, John and Ronald Williams; eight great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
